Its not about forgetting, but learning!!

A good friend of mine asked me a questions about why there are some things, like certain memories of people, that we can't get over; that no matter how much we try to forget or get over or push to the back of our minds we never seem to get away from. This was the answer I sent to her, and though many have asked me this question before, it was my hands and not my mind that did the writing so I figured I'd share this with any who wished to know as well.

"We're not meant to forget. We will go many days, nights, years, and lifetimes without forgetting. So go ahead and mark "Try to forget" as not an option. In every experience there is something to gain, perhaps instead of looking at it and frowning on the whole situation; remembering how hard it was to get over, all the good times they had together and how long that took to get over- I would focus on being grateful for the person and what they did for you. Whether it made you realize that the particular personality isn't the kind you find attractive, or how much you as a person would take a certain kind of abuse. Being grateful for everything that takes place in your life is an amazing gift. Over time, because it does take time, gratefulness will blossom into understanding, love, compassion not only for the things you hold dear but also for the things you fear which is everything that has always stood in your way. Its great because it applies to everything, the people you observe, whether on the road or in a park, directly or indirectly, this life is so amazing, so intricate, so delicate, and if you can appreciate the value of life, it (life) will give you exactly what you need and YOU will understand why its giving it to you and how to use it...Thats the secret of the secret. :-D"
